MagTag® Setup Instructions - Android Version

These setup instructions are complete. There are no additional steps outside this page. If your MagTag turns on but does not connect, one or more of the required Android settings below has been missed or is turned off.

Important: These instructions are for the MagTag® Android / Google Find Hub version only

  1. Ensure Compatibility
MagTag® requires an Android phone or tablet running Android 9 or later with Google Play services installed and up to date. The device must be signed in to a Google Account on its main user profile.

  2. Install or Update Google Find Hub
Install or update Google Find Hub from the Google Play Store. Also install any available Android system and Google Play system updates before beginning setup.

  3. Set a Screen Lock
A PIN, pattern or password must be set on your Android device to use Google’s encrypted crowdsourced Find Hub network properly. Fingerprint or face unlock can still be used, but a PIN, pattern or password must also be configured.

  4. Activate Bluetooth, Location and Internet
Turn on Bluetooth and Location, and connect your Android device to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Keep the phone awake and unlocked while pairing.

  5. Enable Nearby Device Scanning
Go to Settings > Google > All services > Devices and turn on Scan for nearby devices. On some Android phones, this may appear under Settings > Google > Devices & sharing > Devices. If the menu wording is different on your phone, search Settings for Scan for nearby devices.

  6. Enable Find Hub and the Offline Network
Go to Settings > Security > Find Hub and ensure Allow device to be located is turned on. Then go to Settings > Google > All services > Find Hub > Find your offline devices and select With network everywhere for the strongest available coverage. Menu names can vary slightly between Android brands.

  7. Remove the Battery-Saving Tab
Your MagTag® includes a battery-saving tab. Pull the small paper tab completely out to activate the battery. There is no need to open the cover or remove the battery.

  8. Power On
Press and hold the button on the side of your MagTag® until you hear one beep.

  9. Connect with Google Fast Pair
Place the MagTag® next to your awake, unlocked Android device—ideally within 50 cm. A Google Fast Pair notification will appear. Tap Connect and follow every on-screen instruction.
Do not look for a + button inside Find Hub. Compatible tracker tags are automatically added to Find Hub when Google Fast Pair is completed.

  10. Assign a Name
When the MagTag® is found, complete the connection and give it a clear custom name so you can identify what it is attached to.

  11. Complete Setup
Follow all remaining Google prompts and allow any requested permissions. Open the Find Hub app and confirm that your MagTag® appears in your device list.

  12. Locate Using Find Hub
Open the Google Find Hub app, select your MagTag® and confirm that its location and Play sound function are working.

  13. Power Off / Reset
Hold the button until you hear a sequence of beeps: first a single beep, then two beeps, followed by three continuous beeps. Release the button at the end of the three-beep sequence (approximately 6 seconds), and the MagTag® will power off.

Proper Placement of Your MagTag®

When finding an appropriate location to mount, place or hide your MagTag®, ensure it can still transmit its signal effectively. If it is heavily concealed or restricted, its transmission range will be reduced. Placing the MagTag® in items such as a child’s backpack or laptop case will not normally affect its signal.

Mounting the MagTag® inside a vehicle or machine surrounded by metal can significantly reduce its transmission range. For a tractor, for example, an external roof mount would provide better performance. Ensure the MagTag® is not placed where its signal is obstructed by heavy materials or metal components.

Testing Signal Strength

After placing or hiding your MagTag®, open Find Hub and test the signal by stepping back a couple of metres at a time and using Play sound. If the tag is inside a vehicle, ensure you have at least 5 metres of usable range. If your phone cannot connect or the sound does not play, adjust the MagTag®’s position until the signal is strong and reliable.

Using Your MagTag® with Google Find Hub

There is no separate MagTag® app required. Once your MagTag® is connected, it will appear in the Google Find Hub app under your devices and items.

It is important to understand how location updates work:
Your Android phone does not continuously track your MagTag®. MagTag® transmits a secure Bluetooth signal. When a participating Android device comes within Bluetooth range, Google’s crowdsourced Find Hub network can securely and anonymously report the location to your Find Hub app.

Location updates are provided by Google’s network and depend on nearby participating Android devices, their settings, internet access and the placement of your MagTag®. When you open Find Hub, allow a short time for the latest available location to appear.

If your Android phone is set to With network in busy places only, Google may wait for location reports from multiple devices before displaying an update. For the strongest available coverage, use With network everywhere under Settings > Google > All services > Find Hub > Find your offline devices.

Why does my MagTag® say “Last seen…” and not update?

“Last seen” means Google Find Hub has not received a newer location report for the MagTag®. This commonly occurs where there are few participating Android devices nearby, when those devices do not have internet access, or when the MagTag®’s signal is obstructed.

If you see no updates after setup, confirm that the MagTag® appears in Find Hub, check its battery level, set Find your offline devices to With network everywhere, and test it in a busy area with passing Android devices. Also check that metal or heavy materials are not blocking the signal.

Replacing the Battery in Your MagTag® Global Micro Tracker

Accessing the battery can be slightly awkward by design, as the casing has been purposefully engineered to meet stringent safety and tamper-resistance standards. This ensures secure battery placement and compliance with regulatory safety guidelines.

  1. Replacement Battery: Use a high-quality CR2032 button battery. Use Duracell, Energizer or Maxell only. Cheap batteries may not provide the required output, which can cause the MagTag® to operate incorrectly.

  2. Open Tag: Make sure your hands and fingers are clean and free of grease.
Place the MagTag® on a soft, non-slip surface with the silver side facing up.
Gently press down on the back cover and twist counterclockwise a few millimetres to release it. If you are having trouble gripping the cover, place a piece of adhesive tape in a ring around one finger with the sticky side facing outwards for better traction.

NOTE: Do not hold the device by its outside edges and apply excessive force. You may damage the device. Damage caused by the user is not covered under warranty.

  3. Remove Battery: Remove and properly dispose of the old battery. A small, flat-edged tool is needed to carefully pry the battery out.

  4. Insert New Battery: Carefully insert the new battery, avoiding unnecessary contact with the powered surface.

  5. Close Tag: Replace the cover and twist it back into its locked position.

  6. Check Connection: Turn the MagTag® on and check it using the Play sound command in Find Hub. Google displays the battery level as OK, Low or Very low; allow time for the reading to refresh.

DO NOT try to re-pair your MagTag® with your Android device after replacing the battery.

Tips for Using MagTag®

  • Limitations: To get the most out of your MagTag®, it is important to understand its limitations and the external variables that can affect performance. Please refer to our FAQ for more information.
  • No UWB Precision Finding: MagTag® does not use ultra-wideband technology, so it does not provide a directional Precision Finding arrow. Use the map, Bluetooth proximity and Play sound in Find Hub.
  • Apple and Android Versions: The two MagTag® versions are separate and cannot be switched between Apple Find My and Google Find Hub.
  • Sharing: After setup, Google Find Hub allows the primary owner to share a tracker tag with up to 10 people. Open the MagTag® in Find Hub and select Share ownership.
  • Identifying Multiple MagTags: Use the Play sound feature in Find Hub to identify each MagTag® before naming or installing it.

Removing, Re-pairing or Transferring Your MagTag®

Do not factory reset a paired MagTag® before removing it from Find Hub.

  1. Place the MagTag® near the Android device and ensure Bluetooth is on.
  2. Open Find Hub and select the MagTag®.
  3. Tap Settings > Remove from Find Hub and confirm removal.
  4. Perform the MagTag® factory reset described below.
  5. Turn it on and complete Google Fast Pair again using the new Google Account or Android device.

Troubleshooting Tips for Android / Google Find Hub

  • Confirm You Have the Android Version: An Apple Find My MagTag® cannot connect to Google Find Hub. Check the product packaging or order details before troubleshooting the phone.

  • Check Android Compatibility: The phone or tablet must run Android 9 or later and include current Google Play services. Devices without Google Play services are not compatible with Google Find Hub tracker tags.

  • Update Android, Google Play Services and Find Hub: Install all available Android system updates, Google Play system updates and Find Hub app updates, then restart the device.

  • Check the Google Account: Confirm you are signed in to the correct Google Account on the device’s main user profile. In Find Hub, check the account selected from the profile icon. A MagTag® already linked to another primary Google Account must be removed from that account and factory reset before it can be paired again.

  • Check the Screen Lock: Set a PIN, pattern or password. Without one, Google cannot provide the full encrypted crowdsourced-network finding experience.

  • Enable Scan for Nearby Devices: Go to Settings > Google > All services > Devices and turn on Scan for nearby devices. The Fast Pair notification may not appear while this is off.

  • Keep the Phone Close, Awake and Unlocked: Place the powered-on MagTag® within 50 cm of the phone and wait for the Fast Pair notification. If it was dismissed, turn the MagTag® off and back on to restart pairing mode.

  • Search for the MagTag Manually: If no notification appears, go to Settings > Google > All services > Devices and look under available nearby devices. You can also try Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, select the MagTag® and follow the Google setup prompt.

  • Check Bluetooth, Location and Internet: All three are required during setup. Toggle Bluetooth and Location off and on, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if available, then retry.

  • Check Find Hub Settings: Ensure Allow device to be located is on and Find your offline devices is set to With network everywhere.

  • Still Cannot Connect? Double-check every setup step first. If all steps have been completed and the problem remains, remove and reset the MagTag®, then test it with a different compatible Android device on a separate Google Account and internet connection. This will confirm whether the problem is caused by the original Android device or its settings.
