MagTag® Responsible Use Guide

MagTag Pty Ltd is committed to promoting the safe, responsible, and lawful use of location-tracking technology. Trackers available from MagTag operate through either Apple’s Find My network or Google’s Find Hub network, depending on the option selected. This guide outlines responsible-use practices, privacy features, and legal considerations applicable to both options.

Intended Use

MagTag® is intended solely for tracking property you own or have explicit permission to monitor, such as:

  • Vehicles, trailers, boats, and equipment

  • Luggage, backpacks, and personal belongings

  • Pets, using an appropriate and secure attachment

  • Children’s property, such as school bags

Important: MagTag® must not be used to track another person without their knowledge and consent. Unauthorised tracking is strictly prohibited and may be illegal under Australian law.

Prohibited Use

Using MagTag® to track another person without their knowledge and consent may violate Australian state and territory surveillance-device, stalking, family-violence, privacy, and criminal laws. Misuse may result in criminal charges, civil penalties, restraining orders, or other legal consequences.

Examples of prohibited use include:

  • Tracking another person without their explicit consent

  • Placing a MagTag® in another person’s vehicle, bag, clothing, property, or belongings without permission

  • Using MagTag® for stalking, harassment, intimidation, surveillance, or coercive control

  • Using MagTag® to obtain another person’s location for an unlawful purpose

Note: Users are solely responsible for ensuring their installation and use of MagTag® complies with all applicable laws.

Privacy and Security Features

MagTag® works with privacy and unwanted-tracking protections provided by Apple and Google, depending on the MagTag® model and the mobile device being used.

  • Network integration: The Apple version connects through Apple’s Find My network, while the Android version connects through Google’s Find Hub network.

  • Protected location information: Location information is processed through the applicable Apple or Google network and is normally accessible through the account paired with the MagTag®, subject to any location-sharing features deliberately enabled by the account owner.

  • Unwanted-tracker alerts: Compatible iPhone and Android devices may notify a person when an unknown Bluetooth tracker that has been separated from its owner appears to be moving with them.

  • Audible warnings: A MagTag® separated from its registered owner may emit a sound as part of the applicable network’s unwanted-tracking protections.

Caution: Privacy and unwanted-tracking protections are not foolproof and can depend on device compatibility, operating-system version, Bluetooth, location settings, and network availability. These features do not remove the user’s obligation to use MagTag® responsibly and lawfully.

Best Practices for Responsible Use

  • Obtain Consent: Always obtain explicit permission before placing a MagTag® in property you do not exclusively own.

  • Inform Other Users: If a vehicle, trailer, boat, equipment, luggage, or other property is shared, inform the other users that a MagTag® is installed.

  • Track Property, Not People: Use MagTag® to protect legitimate personal or business assets. Do not use it as a means of monitoring another person’s movements.

  • Regular Checks: Periodically check the battery, connection, registration, and functionality of your MagTag®.

  • Secure Placement: Install MagTag® securely and in a location that does not create a safety risk or infringe another person’s privacy.

  • Remove Before Transfer: Remove or unpair your MagTag® before selling, gifting, lending, or permanently transferring the tracked property to another person.

Reporting Suspected Misuse

If you receive an unwanted-tracker alert or suspect that a MagTag® or another Bluetooth tracker is being used to track you without consent:

  1. Prioritise Your Safety: If you believe you are in immediate danger, move to a safe public location and call Triple Zero (000).

  2. Review the Alert: Follow the instructions displayed on your phone. You may be able to view where the tracker was detected and play a sound to help locate it.

  3. Check on iPhone: Open the Find My app, select Items, and review Items Detected With You or any unwanted-tracking notification displayed on your device.

  4. Check on Android: Open Settings, select Safety & emergency, then Unknown tracker alerts and Scan now. Menu names may differ slightly between Android devices.

  5. Preserve Evidence: Take screenshots of the alert, detection map, device identifier, serial number, and any other information shown before disabling or removing the tracker.

  6. Disable the Tracker When Safe: Follow the on-screen or device-specific instructions to disable the tracker. Be aware that disabling it will stop further location updates and may affect evidence available to police.

  7. Contact Police: Report suspected unlawful tracking to your local police and provide the tracker, screenshots, serial number, device identifier, and any other available evidence.

  8. Seek Support: Contact 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 if the suspected tracking involves stalking, domestic violence, family violence, or coercive control.
